Happy First Day of Spring to everyone! We always celebrate with a special cake and a party if we can invite a few people over. Of course, washing and putting away the winter gear is part of the celebration too. I love living in a place where the first day of spring actually seems like spring. Happy Wednesday to you all!
One of the most current pieces I have made went through quite a transformation from beginning to end. I wanted to take you on a bit of the journey with me and hopefully this can give you an idea of how one can work in an art journal and then bring that piece to life on a canvas as a finished piece of art.
When I first made this piece, it was in a class with Laly Mille, one of the artists I follow and take classes from. It’s a bit of a processing piece as I was working through our upcoming move. I was leaving a lot of beloved things behind and had no idea if the new place we were coming to was good or not. I felt tossed about and uncertain, but I knew that God was still in control and leading me in the midst of all that confusion. There was a bunch of empty space to the left side of this spread, as you can see above, but for balance, I added in stormy clouds.
Then we moved and settled. I could see that we had landed in very ‘pleasant places’. When I flipped through my art journal and saw this piece I wanted to show that all that confusion and storminess was real but that I had been heading into a good place, not just floating about in confusion. There had been a destination all along. It made sense to replace those storm clouds on the left with a window to show that.
I loved how this piece morphed over time, given the changes I went through. This is what I love about the art I make, getting to express and work through emotions and feelings and somehow express them in a way that others can relate to. There are prayers written into this piece and some song lyrics that point me to the Truth that is always there. Even if no one else can read it, it’s there and I know it every time I walk by it and see it.
