It is the second entry in my tips on making artistic practice part of a busy life.
First was to find an art form that can be done in small time slots. I highly recommend art-journaling in any form. Also, keep in mind that creativity can be brought into any sphere of home and life.
Secondly, have a dedicated art space.
Now don’t mishear me. I don’t mean clear a whole bedroom out to devote to creating art. That is often impossible. It’s not what I do either.
But somewhere in your house, there is probably a nook, a corner, a closet, or a table you can claim and keep a few (or many 😉) art supplies in.
My previous art space was a combination of these two. We had a large bonus room that was our homeschool room, and the kids' creative space and my studio space. With a woodstove thrown in for cozy warmth. I called it our creative zone.
My current space is tucked into a large oddly shaped hallway with my schoolroom on one side and my laundry room on the other side. I find I can steal a few minutes on my way from the schoolroom or right after I’m done with whatever laundry phase I’ve just finished.
Anytime I have a spare five minutes, I run to my art space and add another layer in the midst of the busyness of everyday life. But that only works with having my supplies handy, accessible, and available at any time of the day. My art table is elevated to a standing height, so I can keep my supplies handy without too much fear of children messing about and I don’t have to sit down, but can literally walk by and add something on the way.
You can do this too! Even if you have small kids, you can find a cozy spot just for you to retreat to for a few minutes of quiet or create a whole creative space that your kids can also get messy in, but maybe at another table.
I’ve seen a rolling cart loaded with supplies that can be put away after a good creative session.
I’ve seen a small watercolor journal in a travel bag with travel-sized art supplies tucked away and brought out when a mom is going on a walk with her kids.
There are so many creative solutions!
